About ExpertMovers
ExpertMovers is a free directory of household goods moving companies. Every listing is matched to the company's federal registration with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), so you can see who a mover is on paper before it shows up with a truck.
What's in the directory
- 28,732 FMCSA-registered movers that carry household goods, across all 50 states and DC.
- 51 state directories and 2,258 city directories — we publish a city page once three or more registered movers are based there.
- A profile for every mover with its USDOT number, MC number, operating authority, whether it's registered for interstate or in-state moves only, and fleet size.
- A USDOT lookup to search any listed mover by number or name.
Where the data comes from
Company records come from the FMCSA's public registration data for carriers that list household goods as cargo, collected in October 2026. That includes the legal and trade names, USDOT and MC numbers, business address and phone number the company filed, its operation type, and the number of trucks and drivers it reported.
Coverage isn't perfect. Records are only as current as our last collection, and some states' records may be incomplete — Texas in particular. A missing company isn't necessarily unregistered: check its number with our lookup or the FMCSA.
How we clean it
- Implausible fleets. Fleet sizes are self-reported. When a record claims far more trucks than its drivers could run (for example tens of thousands of trucks and two drivers), we leave it out of fleet totals and rankings — 226 records so far — and don't display the figure.
- Pending authority. A company whose operating authority application is still pending is shown as pending, never as authorized.
- Names. When a "doing business as" field holds a description rather than a name, we show the legal name instead.
What a listing means — and doesn't
A listing means the company appears in federal records as a registered carrier of household goods. It is not a review, a rating or an endorsement, and we don't accept payment to be listed or ranked. The "Before you book" checklist on each profile separates what the federal record confirms from what you need to check yourself.
How quote requests work
The quote form on our pages sends your request to independent moving companies and brokers serving your route, who contact you with quotes. That's how ExpertMovers is paid for. The companies that contact you are not necessarily the ones listed on the page you were reading, and you can check any of them with the USDOT lookup before you book. See the privacy policy for exactly what's shared.
How we write the guides
Our 10 federal guides are written from the text of the regulations themselves — 49 CFR Parts 370, 371 and 375 and Title 49 of the U.S. Code — and every page lists the sections it relies on. For the state-by-state rules, we only mark a rule as confirmed when a state statute or agency says so, and every page shows the date we checked. Where we couldn't find an official source, the page says "unconfirmed" instead of guessing.
